Costume research

I have researched what clothes does the artist "Chiddy Bang" wear and what costumes my group should be wearing fir this performance. I have found the official "Chiddy Bang" store where i could buy the clothes perfect for our music video.

The clothes which are presented here have a solid one colour base layer for example red/black and colourful funky writting with some catchy phrase or brand name/logo.

Researching deeper into the rap genre and clothing of rap artists i have found that most artists appear in New Era caps or beanie hats. For example Jay-Z, who is a mainstream rap artist is wearing a shirt with a catchy phrase and a New Era Snapback. This gives me an outline of clothes i could possibly wear for my Music Video.

I have researched Chiddy Bang's costume for photoshoots and concerts and have found simmilar style to what i expected so a New Era cap and shirt with funky colours and writting which is perhaps childish to some extent which can link directly to the title of my music video "opposite of adults".

The potential costumes for the production are; shirts/jumpers with one colour base layer and a big logo or a phrase which is written in funky text. Nike or a major brand footwear and jeans which are worn perticularly low. On top of that some New Era caps to fulfill the rap clothing style.

Favourite Music Director

My favourite music video director is Hype Williams. Hype worked with all major rap stars such as: Kanye West, Busta Rhymes, Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z and many others. I have been researching his work and found that he has common stylistic features in his videos which i will mention.

First of all i have spotted that Hype Williams likes to use on screen text to introduce who will be performing in the video clip and also introduce himself. I have seen this in many clips he has created for example "Kanye West- All of the lights" or "Nicki Minaj - Stupid Hoe".

Second thing i have spotted is that the director has a tendency to use bright colours in his music videos meaning that the colour of the background will be really live and bright perhaps standing out a bit. Hype Willams has used this technique in music video called " Empire state of mind".

Another thing i have seen reappearing in Hype Williams' music videos is animation. The director uses a lot of animation to create objects, illusions or just on screen text. He used animation to create insects on the music video called "Why stop now" and in the same clip he used animation to create illusion that one of the artist has incredible strength when he lifted a whole building up.

Music Video 6

I like the way multiple screens are used at the same time to create the artist. This is very interesting and makes me stay until †he en. There is performance only so i could learn a lot from it and this ispired me to perhaps try the same technique in my music video. I have learnt that generally music videos tend to have a lot of hand gestures when the peformes are working. I think i should be aware of the amount of costume i use in my video as this could be problematic but the director of this clip has used this well and everything was correctly placed and synced.

Music video 5

I like the use of an image similar to Charlie Chaplin which adds humor to the whole clip. I like the use of captions on screen to add speech to the story which inspires me to do something similar in my video. I think creating setting like this would be too much of a challenge for me and i think i will avoid this kind of settings (less natural or harder to find).

Music video 4

in this music video i like the way the artist uses a dance choreography in the chorus which makes the video more interesting and also makes me watch it until the end. The use of lighting and colour saturation inspires me to pay more attention when i will be doing my music video as this changes the whole atmosphere and sets a specific mood for the audience which is very important. I think i should avoid using explosions in my music video as this is too dangerous when performed by not experienced students.

Music video 3

I like the effect of the lens being shaped differently than conventional and making the performers look closer than they really are. The inter-cutting between the performers and a story made me stay until the end. This inspired me and made me more aware of how to do this correctly without ruining one or the other. I think i should avoid using special effects like in this music video when the artist lifted the bus up as this might be too hard for a student to do.

Music video 2

I really like the use of make up in this clip to show different classes like for example a poor man (homeless) has a lot of make up representing dirt and physical unhealthiness. The different settings make me watch the music video until the end as they are very different and unconventional for a music video. What inspires me about this music video is the move of camera rather than the camera being set to one point keeping the same frame which inspires me to do the same in my music video. I think i should avoid using heavy make up as this is a very hard part of preparation and requires a lot of skill to do it correctly.

Music VIdeo 1

I like the use of comic drawings changing into a real life situation. The use of different colour gradients like green for example makes me watch the video until the end and the use of words on screen matching the lyrics is a very interesting technique which i could also use in my own music video. I think i should avoid doing the animations as this might be too complex for a student.
